Despite the fact that it was a working day, a Wednesday, when the management of Hypertek Music decided to celebrate the sixth album of seasoned musician, Tuface Idibia’s Ascension; though it was called industry nite, the attendance was a testimony of the appreciation of the love and respect they have for Idibia. Right from the expansive compound housing other businesses, Spice Route at Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island witnessed an unprecedented crowd. The car park was totally filled. Others had to pack outside and across the road. It was not different inside; music lovers, friends and fans covered every available space from the ground floor to upstairs. A lot more patiently stood, waiting for Idibia to do what he knows how to do best with the microphone. For those that came early, it was double enjoyment. First they were ushered upstairs to an exclusive room where assorted snacks, meat, prawns, cakes and drinks were served. Two cakes with the picture of Tuface and Dammy Krane were placed side by side on the buffet table. Hennessy and other expensive drinks were served before they were ushered down stairs for the main event. It wasn’t a surprise to see so many people and personality at the occasion as Tuface is one artistes that is loved by all and sundry not only because of his talents but humility and kindness. He is one artiste who is ever ready assist up and coming musicians without asking for a dime, unlike some big names who insists on a particular fee from struggling artistes before they can be featured in their music or video. 17 years in the music industry is no mean feat for no less a personality like Idibia and maybe coincidentally or intentionally, he choose to release 17 songs in his latest effort, ‘Ascension’. He also featured different artistes, young and old, foreign and local; maybe he is set to finally break into the international market big time. As evening went into night, DJ Spinoff was blasting on the wheels of steel keeping guests busy on the dancing floor. A beautiful female up and coming artiste by name, Jaylove opened the show with two beautiful songs. Ozone, Mojeed, The Boy and Pucado from Aristokrat Records respectively performed. They gave a very good account of themselves with good songs. It was the turn of Konga and Rocksteady who separately rocked the excited audience with their singing skills. Next was wavemaking music sensation Dammy Kane of Hypertek Records whose performance so thrilled the gathering that a female Caucasian climbed the stage and displayed some dancing proficiency to the admiration of all. Infact, she taught Krane a thing or two in dancing. There was a few minutes music video of the official theme song of Chimamanda Adichie’s internationally acclaimed novel which was adapted into a blockbuster movie, ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’. It was a remix of the hit song of the defunct music group, KUSH entitled, ‘Lets Live Together’. The song which preaches peace and the need for Nigerians to live in harmony as a country as the source of the nation’s strength features a member of the defunct group, Lara George, Tuface Idibia, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Flavour, Chinwetel Ejiofor, Chimamanda Adichie, Genevieve Nnaji, among others. The video was directed by China. The highpoint of the occasion was the unassuming entrance of the man of the moment-Tuface idibia who no doubt did not disappoint his fans as he sang some songs from his new album which to the surprise of a few, was echoed by the crowd who joined along in singing songs that just hit music shelves. Idibia also made an announcement. He said: “This is a sendoff party for Tuface, after tonight, it’s going to be Tubaba” The likes of Timaya, Awilo, Julius Agwu,Oritse Femi, Rocksteady joined Tuface on stage to sing some of his songs and theirs. The Congolese superstar, Awilo, who revealed that he had to shelve his plans of travelling back to his base in London to honour Tuface had a swell evening. He not only sang some of his hit songs but surprised many when Eddy Lawani asked him to beat the drums while Julius Agwu who had done a remix of his 1998 hit album, ‘Coupe Bamba’ sang some of Awilo’s hits. It was later gathered that Awilo actually began as a drummer before he decided to test his singing skill. Other artistes that graced the epoch making event included, Dr. Sid, Wande Coal, Solidstar, among many others. It was also noticed that Blackface and Faze, Tuface’s former partners when they were Plantazion Boiz were absent.
