"Despite the gains that Afghanistan has made in improving education, especially for girls, there remains much to be done. More than 30% of primary school-aged children are still out of school. Several non-governmental organizations I met with in Kabul noted that even children who attend school still struggle to read and perform basic math. In many southern and rural provinces the participation of girls in school is still low, which is impacted by a severe shortage of teachers, especially female teachers."
