Despite the numerous references to voyages in Les Fleurs, Baudelaire, as Sartre was to painfully point out, was no great traveller, in the literal meaning. Aside from his late trip to Belgium, he only left France once in a boat rather similar to this one for a couple of months when he was a young man in 1841. He was twenty years of age and bound for the south seas. Seeing the Jeanie Johnson berthed alongside the quays yesterday reminded me of this extraordinary man, and wonderful poet. Mais qui Charles, en pense a vous toujours!
