Despite the strong artistic personality of Jon Anderson and Vangelis Papathanassiou, the duo officially formed from the late seventies without thereby abandoning their careers was never independents, to our joy, an ever sum of what could theoretically provide each of its members. Jon & Vangelis is anything musically speaking, much as theres peculiar voice of Anderson and no less peculiar and spectacular is Evangelos keyboards; Each works to give the best of themselves, but also to fully support the other. Private Collection is a short album as a number of issues are concerned, but very huge as far as production is concerned melodies. It is impossible for anyone at that time lograse a perfect sound. I am not clear at all if it is a conceptual or not work, although the letters themselves give off abundant references to tenderness, love and religious faith. Even as their first close the sophisticated pop and almost perfectly commercial songs, there is room for experiments. In this sense we have Italian Song, first cut of the album, Anderson sings in an Italian invented. I mean, its not Italian but a phonetic imitation. Its a slow song, with the voice of soprano vocalist, seems almost an aria. The Ballad And When the Night Comes is perhaps the least known of the album theme, not being of lesser quality, but because it is so bright and invites least humming. Deborah is one of those songs that always seem to know but have never heard before. The letter refers to a parent who keeps correspondence by letter with his young daughter. Exquisite topic. Polonaise (a Polish, notes the title) is not the most famous of Private Collection. Sounds like a hymn that begins with shyness and goes to a powerful crescendo final stretch. This theme was inspired by the political events that took place in those years in Poland, with the union Solidarity and its struggle against the Soviet regime. Then comes He Is Sailing. Im not sure what kind of images we can bring the thoughts, but may be exotic and imaginary places. All that is there, and yet others weigh what its religious content, because He Is Sailing is practically the Father with some variations. For its strong pace and the sumptuousness of its instrumental arrangements, especially a crushing percussion, somewhat reminiscent in its approach to State of Independence of The Friends of Mr. Cairo, but in any case it is a subject that produces a feeling of freedom, travel and adventure difficult to explain if you do not listen. The second side of the vinyl edition occupies the whole issue Horizon, the longest piece in the career of the duo and one of the most ambitious. For many this issue is comparable to Awaken to Yes edited some earlier in his magnificent Going For The One (1977), but with a more electronic approach obviously. It is practically an elongated conventional song during the first ten minutes, but the atmosphere is so spectacular, so huge, that at all times we feel really be facing a much more complicated than it really suite. The second half is much more intimate, although Vangelis manages for its subtle touches of piano transported us to a sublime place beyond the stratosphere. As for his subject, is a prayer to the confidence that abounds in almost utopian optimism -very new age, it must be said that contribute Anderson lyrics to almost all the disk. Sixth song was recorded during the sessions for Private Collection, which also appeared as a B-side from the albums singles, but never as an integral part thereof. This is Song Is And what does a Private Collection best Short Stories (1980) and The Friends of Mr. Cairo? (1981) It is not easy to explain, but I think all who have heard these albums came to the same conclusion: Private Collection is a much stronger album, more flavor set that achieves delve deeper in our minds of listeners, while short Stories that had no great melodic cares and Mr. Cairo seemed more a loose collection of topics, some a bit out of tone that a coherent whole. There was still to come fourth album, Page of Life (1991), late at times and a bit lacking in freshness and originality.
