Despite the traps that remain empty in the East Mooring Basin in Astoria Oregon. Yesterday, SLDB observers witness Matt Tennis PSMFS employee tying a dead sea lion to the side of his boat. The sea lion appears to have been tied to the dock near the small trap on the East Side of the Basin. Matt attaches the animal and drags the dead sea lion far out into the Shipping Channel on the Columbia River where Tennis then disposes of the body. SLDB questions why a necropsy was not performed on this animal to help determine the cause of death ? We have so many more questions surrounding the death of this sea lion, and we will share the answers with you as soon as they develop. Out of respect for the fallen we have named him Phoenix. R.I.P. Please contact: Donna Wieting Director of Protected Resources NOAA Ask her to please pull the permit for the lethal take of sea lions on the Columbia River for eating fish. We all want our children to learn to share, and to be nice to animals not hurt them. This bad policy leads to bad behavior. The Columbia River Dogs need more protection not less from those inclined to do them harm.
