Despite the typical America is NUMBER ONE! cry, America tends to rank low in many respects....highest poverty rate among the developed nations for example, among the lowest regarding student test scores, and so forth. However, there are exceptions (outside of military force), and one of them via an independent British study (meaning no ax to grind) suggest the number one and most efficient postal service in the entire world is the United States Postal Service or USPS. That being the case, why would we stupidly want to privatize it? foreignpolicy/articles/2013/02/06/the_world_s_best_post_offices From Foreign Policy magazine…not exactly a liberal rag. Other articles Ive come across suggest that local small businesses depend very heavily on advertising via snail mail, privatization would most likely lead to higher cost in an environment which is already pro-large conglomerates but very anti-small business. You also have the matter of elderly that depend on mail order prescriptions that live in rural communities that may be hurt with privatization because those mail routes would simply not be cosidered profitable. Lastly most privatizations are usually structured to rid of a labor union (for example, cities that have moved from municipal owned bus service to private company, or public schools to charter schools, etc.) Typically workers at privatized service are payed less and the result is yet another class of people that slip from the middle class. ( Not totally responsible for middle class shrinkage but certainly played a role, is the decrease in unionization in the private sector…from 33.3% in the 1970s to about 6.7% now.). There is little to no evidence that privatization increases efficiency and typically ads a layer of cost to the public. However, its usually a wonderful gift for an S&P 500 company.
