Destination: Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles west of Key West, halfway between Cuba and Naples. These photos are of the navigation screen captured en route early last week. These distant, remote islands are among my favorite places on Earth. Having visited them for the first time in 2008, I had been longing to return. The chance came in late May when a friend from Tampa offered the use of his motor yacht that was based in Key West. The occasional was to celebrate my 4th anniversary with Suzie. The timing happened to also fall during my current assignment to photograph the Gulf or Mexico for The Nature Conservancy. So I flew to Key West, met captain Mark and got a three day head start to work in advance of a weekend vacation. Eight hours cruise time conserving fuel. No phone service or Internet for five days, so no chance for realtime posts. I just got back to the mainland yesterday and am still digesting the experience.
