Destination Weddings – Things to Know 1) Who pays for what? It all depends on the couple. Typically the bride and groom pay for a welcome dinner, the ceremony and reception, and a farewell brunch. Family members may host and cover the expense of the welcome dinner and brunch. Some resorts offer these events complimentary. There will be a guest limit with an additional fee for numbers exceeding the complimentary package. Guests and wedding party pay for their own travel and accommodations. Sometimes the bride and groom will pick up the tab for certain family members’ rooms. 2) How are all the arrangements prepared for our wedding? Most resorts will have an on-site wedding planner. • The wedding planner will coordinate all details – ie: welcome dinner, ceremony, and any additional activities, including making sure everything goes off on time. • Make sure you have everything in writing or through e-mail. • You will want to follow up with your wedding planner prior to your arrival to reconfirm all wedding details. • Your Wedding Planner will assist with all legal requirements for a marriage license • Suggestion – bring a gift for your wedding planner. 3) Should we expect gifts from our guest attending the wedding? This is up to the discretion of the guest, however when a guest has paid to attend your wedding it is acceptable and common that they do not purchase a gift. 4) What should we do first? • Set a budget • Pick a location (first and second choice) • Meet with your travel agent • Tell family members, friends, and attendants the location and date so they can start saving • Check into the marriage license laws and requirements of your destination. Most brides will have a civil ceremony in the United States and have a ceremonial wedding at their chosen destination. The ceremony will have all the components of a wedding minus the legally binding service performed in the United States under United States laws.
