Bhalo Kore Porga Iskul E..(Subal Das Bauls Song)..Last Presentation Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in association with Asian Paints, IRCON and Marico Bangladesh organised an Evening of Baul Music by Mr. Syed Waqeel Ahad at 6:30 PM on November 7, 2014, at the IGCC, House No. 35, Road No. 24, Gulshan-1. Singer, composer and lyricist, Mr. Syed Waqeel Ahad, spent a substantial part of his life with the Bauls living in different parts of the country especially in Kushtia, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Chittagong and greater Sylhet region where he picked up the nuances of Baul song and music. Waqeel was initiated to music by his father after which he undertook formal music lessons at the Nazrul Academy where he trained under Ustad Syed Zakir Hossain, Ustad Akhter Sadmani and Ful Mohammad Miah. Thereafter, he worked with renowned local and foreign musicians and experimented with different genres of music like Eastern classical, jazz, blues and sufi music. Mr. Ahad stepped into the music industry with his song “Cellphone Amar cellphone” that was released with the mixed album Jhalmuri-2 in 2007. He presented songs of legendary bard Lalon and other Bauls in the next album Project-365 that received kudos from the music lovers of this country and abroad. His renditions in the mixed album Saturday Sessions were also widely appreciated by the audience. He has sung five songs for the yet to be released film Nomuna directed by Enamul Karim. Waqeel’s songs mostly deal with nature, human psyche, relationships and social awareness related messages. In his latest album titled ‘Waqeel-er Gaan’, Waqeel has fused folk, Baul and Western music through effective and intelligent use of traditional and Western musical instruments like dhol, flute, dotara, ghatam and khamak, guitar, drums and key board. The album features romantic, patriotic and rock numbers. Waqeel has also sung five Rabindra Sangeet including one solo and one duet in Shadhona’s mega project -- Tagore’s dance drama “Tasher Desh”. He has also composed and directed several TVC jingles for various local and multinational corporate brands. Waqeel has also a deep penchant for playing different percussion instruments like flute and dotara. He regularly undertakes live musical concerts, TV shows and radio programs. Mr. Ahad recently represented Bangladesh in the India phase of British Council’s three-year musical project Folk Nations that features fusion of folk songs from different corners of the world. Besides music, Mr. Ahad is also a theatre activist. He joined Loko Natya Dal, a leading theatre troupe, in 1996, and acted in acclaimed plays like ‘Sonai Madhab,’ ‘Kanjus,’ ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’ etc. He voluntarily worked with many organizations with the aim to save the environment and to promote organic farming and tree plantation. *****
