Detained Kabwe-based journalist Wilson Mpondamali’s health has continued to deteriorate as his incarceration continues at a medical centre where he is chained to his bed. Mpondamali, who is admitted at the Kabwe General Hospital after collapsing in a police cell, is on drip and is reportedly suffering from Pneumonia. The Kabwe scribe who has been arrested for allegedly being a contributor to critical online publication the Zambian Watchdog said he had been chained and handcuffed leading to having swollen limbs. He said he was being kept under a heavy police guard that had treated him like a common criminal. Mpondamali received a rare visit from the Media Institute of Southern Africa Zambia and Malawi chapters. After the visit, MISA Zambia chairperson Nalumino Nalumino expressed shock at the manner Mpondamali was being treated. He said the continued harassment of the press under the Patriotic Front government was denting the image of the country internationally. Mpondamali is the third journalist to be jailed after former Evelyn Hone College lecturer Clayson Hamasaka and freelance journalist Thomas Zyambo were thrown in cells for allegedly being part of the Zambian Watchdog. The PF government has since grounded online publications that it deems critical of the Michael Sata led regime.
