Detectives investigating a scam which targeted an elderly woman in Welwyn Garden City are releasing CCTV images of two men they wish to speak with in connection with the incident. The scam occurred on September 23 when a 90 year old woman from the town received telephone calls from a man claiming to be a police officer. He convinced the woman to make a number of purchases of high value goods in Welwyn Garden City and later in London. The woman bought a mobile phone, iPad and Playstation in the town before then travelling to London where she bought two watches in Selfridges. All of these items were handed over to a man outside of the shop in London who identified himself as a police officer. The woman lost nearly £50,000 to the offender(s). The telephone that was used to contact the victim is believed to have been topped up in a convenience store in Midland Road, Bedford. Detective Constable Mark Cotte is investigating and said: “The two men pictured are believed to have been in the store around the time the phone was topped up and so we would like to speak with them as they may be able to assist our investigation. “Anyone who recognises the men, or has any other information about this incident, should contact me straight away via Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference B1/14/2834. Alternatively people can call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
