Detours (Genesis 29:15-30) Dr. Charles Stanley, Life Principles Daily Bible It happens just as you are within sight of your goal - something puts the object of your pursuit even further away from your grasp. It is a detour that makes you doubt whether you will ever succeed in your efforts. For Jacob, it was the moment he realized he had married Leah instead of Rachel (see Gen. 29:25-27). For the disciples, it was when the Messiah they hoped would restore the kingdom of Israel was crucified (see Luke 24:13-21). What was it for you? Did your company reorganize and let you go just as you were up for a promotion? Has some illness or financial problem impended your progress? It can be any number of setbacks that break your heart and crush your spirit. Yet, understand this - God has not failed you. He has a better plan than you realize. Though the detour is difficult, you will see that it was definitely worth it. Remember, God had a greater plan for Jacob. From Leahs womb came six of the 12 tribes of Israel (see Gen. 29:32-35; 30:17-20); and from her maid Zilpah came two more of the tribes (see Gen. 30:9-13). For the disciples, three days after the crucifixion, they discovered that the kingdom the Messiah was ushering in was greater and more powerful that they could ever imagine - because it was the eternal kingdom of God (see Luke 24:44-49). What you must ask yourself as you wait is if this goal you have been pursuing is more important than your relationship with God. Will you still trust Him, even though you cannot see how to reach your goal? Trust Him, friend. Surely, the LORD will perfect that which concerns [you] (Ps. 138:8).
