Detox Diets: You keep reading a lot about detoxing. This is actually humbug. Your kidneys, colon and liver do the work of detoxing. They most certainly do not need external support. 1) Detox diets are primarily nutrient poor, low sugar, low calorie diets. In the long run they are extremely detrimental to your health and put a severe strain on your organs. 2) You end up lose weight rapidly with a detox diet. But the problem is that you end up losing water and muscles mass instead of fat. As a result of which, not only is it affecting your organs, you will immediately feel the symptoms such fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability etc. 3) Such diets since they are low sugar, low nutrient and low calorie, send a signal to your body that its going into famine mode. So, the first thing your body does, is to stop burning fat completely and to slow down the metabolic rate. 4) Since a detox diet cannot be sustained for long, all the weight that you lost, you will put on rapidly simply because it will take your body some time to up the metabolic rate once again. You will have to work hard to recover the loss of muscle mass, if at all. You could have done irreparable damage to your organs. 4) Such diets if undertaken for a day (as Indians often do for religious reasons) or two are not harmful. But it cannot be done often and regularly.
