Detroit friends: what memories do you have of this terrible week 47 years ago? On a day like today, Sunday July 23, 1967 I remember my grandfather was awakened by a phone call: his place of employment on 12th Street in Detroit was on fire Riots were breaking out all over the city and were to rage for five days Grandpa was never to work again Detroit City would never be the same The playground where I worked in Oak Park shut down because of the danger An 8 PM curfew was imposed, even in the suburbs Tanks and National Guard troops rolled down the streets of the city Firing off more than 150,000 shots Black folks hid in their homes and apartments in fear Soon White folks fled to the suburbs in mass Today almost 50 years later Were still trying to fix the mess sparked by raid on an after hours party to welcome home two Black veterans from the Vietnam War
