Detroit is the newest victim of disaster capitalism, the use of catastrophes, in this case the bankruptcy filing, to force deeply hated reforms like pension wipe-outs, privatizations, etc. About half of Detroiters are set to be cut off from municipal water in the sweltering summer amidst ballooning water bills. Local activists say the cut-offs are part of a plan “to sweeten the pot for a private investor” to take over the city’s heavily-indebted water and sewer system as part of Detroit’s broader bankruptcy proceedings. And people wonder why my generation hates the prevailing economic system??
