Devastated to read the news just now that one of my all-time heroes, former Small Faces and Faces keyboard player Ian Mac McLagan has died of a stroke, aged 69. As one of the four Magjc Midgets of the Small Faces, Mac was part of an amazing era of British music, and he contributed vitally to their unique sound with his extraordinary organ, piano and Mellotron playing, and his lovely songs. They remain for me the ultimate British band of the 60s and their legacy is indelible and untouchable. As part of The Faces, he was one of the leading lights of 70s British rock, and in later years he contributed to countless other fine recordings, including his great work in The Blokes with Billy Bragg, whom I was lucky enough to see. I cant think of a better tribute to Mac than his own song from the Small Faces masterpiece, Ogdens Nut Gone Flake. Vale, Mac:
