“Development is about transforming the lives of people, not just transforming economies.” ~ Joseph Stiglitz I think its fair to say that Stiglitz was talking about real flesh and blood people, not the monstrosities now called corporate persons. And in a democracy I think it follows that it means the majority of the people, not just the one percent of one percent. An increase in CEO bonuses in a year when millions lost their jobs and hundreds of thousands lost their homes to foreclosure should be considered to be the abject FAILURE of the marketplace. “ ..it’s ridiculous to talk about freedom in a society dominated by huge corporations. What kind of freedom is there inside a corporation? They’re totalitarian institutions - you take orders from above and maybe give them to people below you. There’s about as much freedom as under Stalinism.” ~ Noam Chomsky So much for the idea of a free marketplace. Sorry folks, Adam Smith no longer applies. He lived and died long before the idea of the modern multinational corporation came into being. “Capitalism, economies, corporations, markets, currencies -- these are not forces of nature, we invented them.” ~ David Suzuki ..and by logical extension of that thought, we can re-invent them.
