Devin Dean On Inspiration of the Bible: I. THE UNITY OF THE BIBLE A. THE BIBLE CONTAINS 66 BOOKS, WRITTEN: 1. Over about a 1600 year span 2. By approximately 40 different men from every walk of life, for example: a. Moses—a political leader trained in the universities of Egypt b. Peter—a fisherman c. Amos—herdsman d. Joshua—a military general e. Nehemiah—a cup bearer to a king f. Daniel—a prime minister g. Luke—a physician h. Solomon—a king i. Matthew—a tax collector j. Paul—a tentmaker and rabbi 3. In different places: a. Moses—in the wilderness b. Jeremiah—in a dungeon c. Daniel—in a palace d. Paul—in prison e. Luke—while traveling f. John—in exile on the isle of Patmos g. Others in the rigors of military campaigns, etc. 4. At different times of life: a. David in times of war b. Solomon in times of peace 5. During different moods: a. Some writing from the heights of joy b. Others from the depths of sorrow and despair 6. On three continents: a. Asia b. Africa c. Europe 7. In three languages: a. Hebrew b. Aramaic c. Greek 8. Which includes hundreds of controversial topics as subject matter: a. The origin of man and the universe b. The nature of God c. The nature of sin and man’s redemption B. YET THERE IS HARMONY AND CONTINUITY—UNITY THROUGHOUT 1. For example: a. “The Paradise Lost of the book of Genesis becomes the Paradise Regained of Revelation” b. “Whereas the gate to the tree of life is closed in Genesis, it is opened forevermore in Revelation” 2. Compare the continuity of the Bible with any other such writings of man a. Imagine what you would have if you just took ten authors: 1) From one walk of life, one generation, one place, one time, one mood, one continent, one language 2) Have them speak on just one controversial subject b. You would get a conglomeration of ideas, not harmony! 3. The reason for the unity of the Bible? a. No man is its author—the men are just penmen, the Holy Spirit (God) is the author (2 Pet. 1:20-21)
