Devon Hunt Sabs - Hit Report 10/1/15 Today we returned to the South Tetcott Foxhounds, who met near Town Farm, Clawton, just south of Holsworthy. They didnt seem too pleased to see us, with their quad thug (the same guy who deliberately drove into sabs the last time we were there) pushing and shoving sabs at the meet and throwing one of our cameras to the ground. The sabs and the camera survived. The four red coats and small field of just 11 riders then set off in the direction of Sellick, before heading for strips of woodland between Fernhill and Gunnacott. The huntsman appeared to make a rather half-baked attempt at casting hounds out, but the hunt stayed on the move, with hounds failing to pick up on anything. As they moved north and then south again, they were never out of sight of our watchful foot teams, who seemed to be popping up everywhere. When the hunt moved further south to Moortown Plantation, foot teams were there too and one group saw a beautiful, very healthy and unperturbed fox walking right in front of them, which the hounds failed to pick up on after its scent was covered by citronella, despite running straight over its line. We had the usual comments here from one of the redcoats, young Joe Hawkins, about us getting paid and having a free lunch, which always makes us laugh. Silly boy! The hunt failed to shake us when they then followed a similar route to when we last visited them, drawing the woods north of Beardown Plantation. Frustrations were shown again here, when one of the redcoats, David Bowden, produced a small knife from his pocket and threatened to cut a sabs throat. The willy-waving of the redcoats was pointless though and sabs stayed with the hunt as they made a feeble effort to cast hounds out in coverts on their way back to the kennels, packing up at 3.30. Wed kept them surrounded all day and didnt leave them many options to do anything else, but that shouldnt matter if they were only trail hunting. As we left the area, thoughts of a nice early finish were scuppered when we saw a lone hound running along the busy A388. As sabs tried to keep it out of the path of speeding traffic, and guided it back up a footpath, we saw a couple of suspicious vehicles parked up in the vicinity of Larksworthy Farms, just north of the hamlet of Henford, and realised wed stumbled across Devons unregistered, and very underground, pack, the Virginstow ... Not wanting to miss the opportunity of packing them up too, foot teams entered the area and immediately heard and then saw hounds in cry south of Larksworthy. Voice calls and a gizmo announced our presence to the hunt, and we stayed with them as the hounds were gathered and boxed up as darkness fell. They werent pleased to see us either, and didnt even offer us a cup of tea. They claimed theyd just been out on a rough shoot, but you dont need a pack of hounds for that. Two hunts in one day. Job done.
