Devotion - December 22, 2014 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:26-33 Last week the winner of the 2014 Heisman Trophy was announced. The award is given to the year’s greatest college football player. Each year, when the announcement is made, the recipient’s parents are there to celebrate with him. They smile and laugh and are understandably proud of his achievement. All parents dream that their child will achieve great things. When they gaze at their newborn baby in the crib, they imagine what he might one day become–a great football player or perhaps the president of the United States. They have to wait years to find out. But for a certain young woman in the small town of Nazareth two thousand years ago, there was no need to wait. The angel Gabriel told Mary that her son would be God himself—not a Heisman Trophy winner, not president of the United States—but GOD HIMSELF! AMAZING! But Gabriel’s announcement was not just amazing for young Mary. It was amazing for the whole WORLD! Her son would grow up to do much more than win a Heisman Trophy, much more than be the leader of the free world. The baby’s name would be Jesus, which means “savior” because he came to save people from their sins. He would deliver you and me from the hell our sins deserve so that we can enjoy the heaven he would win for us. As you celebrate the birth of God in a few days, rejoice that Mary’s Son achieved such great things. Prayer: Lord Jesus, what a marvelous announcement your messenger gave to Mary that day so long ago. Thank you for entering the womb of a woman so that I might one day enter into heaven itself. Amen.
