Devotion Monday, October 6 Judgment or Restoration? “Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.” Gal. 6:1-3 Paul gives very clear and practical instructions for dealing with a brother or sister who is “overcome” in some sin. Why then is it most Christian tend to totally ignore Paul’s counsel and rush to judgment instead? This is twice as bad if it happens to be a leader who has fallen to some temptation. Certainly being overcome with some sin requires help and accountability to get back on top of things spiritually, but the knee jerk reaction of those find out about the sin is generally one of criticism and judgment. I don’t find that attitude here at all. Why is it that we are so quick to want to wad up and throw away people who have fallen? Paul doesn’t even hint at it. His default position is restoration … with a huge dose of humility on the part of those helping to restore the fallen brother or sister. It is when we start to judge others we are most likely to trip up ourselves. Let us commit to following Godly counsel. Father help me overcome the natural, fleshly tendency to judge and rather choose to walk in the counsel of your word. Help me to be a restorer, Steve Highlander, V.P. SEAMisT USA
