Devotion Title: “Even When It Hurts” Date: 3-7-14 Text: Joshua 9:26-27 The Big Idea: Victorious Families Honor their commitments even when it hurts. My Thoughts: Victorious Families honor their commitments even when it hurts; the hurt I’m referring to is that of integrity and being a leader who keeps his word. Joshua was getting pressure from all quarters of the community (see v.18). Joshua fortunately had the support of the rest of the leadership, and as they stood side by side, they all realized that their reputation was on the line. The people believed their was an exception clause to honoring one’s commitment: The agreement was made under false pretenses…. Lifestyle worshipers, does Joshua’s honoring his commitment rub you the wrong way, too? Do you believe that a commitment based on deception is thereby invalid? (Notice (vv. 21 & 27) there were still consequences to the Gibeonites’ deception. They did not get off ‘Scott Free’.) What are your thoughts on honoring your commitments, especially those before the LORD, even when it ‘hurts’? Share your thoughts. Scriptures to Renew Your Thoughts LORD, who may dwell in Your sanctuary? Who may live on Your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart …who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, — Psalm 15:1, 2, 4 (NIV84) When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God. — Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 (NIV84) Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. — Matthew 5:37 (NIV84) Lord Jesus Christ, be my Integrity as I honor the commitments I do make. I trust You to bear the consequences of others when they deceive me to get their way. Let Your Truth be so evident in my Life that I need not join them in their lack of integrity. In Your Name Amen.
