Devotion Title: “He has Chosen You” Date: 12-02-13 Text: Luke 2:8–12 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” [NIV84] The Big Idea: The LORD presents an invitation to lowly shepherds. My Thoughts: Do not let the familiarity of this passage rob us of the deep truths of this invitation to a birthday party. Perhaps we have often heard it said that the LORD presents an invitation to lowly shepherds, and we’ve been numbed to the “lowly” aspect of the shepherds, not realizing that these were not highly respected professionals, but much nearer the scum of the earth and the bottom of the barrel. Yes, we see the cute costumes of our bright smiling children who “bah” through their programs, yet let us not too quickly be distracted by them: this invitation is to the lowest of the low…. Lifestyle Worshipers, you may feel so low that the LORD has abandoned you, forgetting to invite you to any gala or heavenly extravaganza, but the truth is He is personally inviting you. You who have nothing to offer the world or Him; yes, you who needs to look up to see light. You whom He deeply Loves, and affectionately cherishes. You! Our Heavenly Father has chosen you. Yes, you have been invited to His Son’s birthday party. Come as you are. Can you see Him waiting at the door for you? Scriptures to Renew Your Thoughts By Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him. It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” — 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (NIV84) Heavenly Father, I humbly receive Your invitation to Your Son’s birthday party. Lord Jesus Christ, continue to be my wisdom, righteousness, holiness and redemption so that I may live the Life worthy of Your Name. In Your NAME Amen. Pastor Mike
