Devotion for 90-Day Challenge, Aug. 14, 2014: Psa 102 I Am Perishable PROMISES TO POCKET We are perishable. God is not. Our days pass away like smoke (v. 3), like an evening shadow (v. 11a) and we wither like grass (v. 11b). Our God, on the other hand, is enthroned forever and remembered throughout all generations (v. 12). Everything else will perish but our God remains (v. 26). This permanence on the part of the Lord is an assurance of security for us but especially for the next generation. Our children will dwell secure and be established before the Lord (v. 28). He may break our strength in midcourse and shorten our days further (v. 23). But we know that there will always be a generation of believers following, still under the shadow of His protection, whom He will free when imprisoned and whose groans He will hear (v. 20), who will declare His name and worship together (v. 22). POINTS TO PONDER One generation pass, another comes along. What is important is that we who are leaving soon is assured that our offspring follows the footsteps that we have set and are not ashamed to claim to be the right path for them to follow. Even the groanings of our spirits, as we sometimes are likely to have, should set the tone of realism that life is not always easy and yet the Lord our God is always within complaining distance from us. If we do our job well, we can warn the coming ones of the mistakes we have committed and help them avoid the same. For just like us, their days are also short and should not be made shorter still by inviting the wrath and indignation of the God who is supposed to prolong their days. PLANS TO PURSUE I am determined to leave sufficient instruction to my own child about the goodness of my God but also warn her about His anger. I will remind her of her own perishability and the practicality of mindfulness of every moment so that none of it will be wasted on tears and regret but rather to be enjoyed in the shadow of the wings of Him who loves to shower blessings upon the righteous. With my remaining life, I will strive for a blameless life, however steep a climb it will take. For I know that a parents life that is blessed also brings blessings to the household and the children.
