Devotion for Today: Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 20. ...and let birds fly above the Earth across the expanse of the sky. What a marvellous thing is flight! Only God could have thought of it! To see an eagle soaring, the flutter of startled grass parrots, the quieter-than-a-whisper angling of an owl, the incredible skills of diving birds! I have often been jealous of such ability - but then I remember my one and only attempt at sky diving (do you remember those old cartoons that showed the character falling out of a plane, and clawing up the sky to get back into the plane! That memory came to me as my instructor and I jumped out...). I am quickly satisfied with being a ground dweller! Birds bones are hollow, they therefore weigh less, in terms of ratio (size:mass) than Earth dwellers and, of course, have feathers aligned (including tail feathers) to assist in flying. How purely amazing of God to make them, though! I also love hummingbirds, with their almost VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) ability; birds that dart around, catching insects in mid-air (not a lot of people can do that, particularly on hot days, when insects are faster, due to their metabolism speeding up. You always knew there was a reason why you had more trouble swatting flies in Summer, didnt you!) and the wonderful glider-like landings in water of the various aquatic birds - and those that dive for food.
