Devotional Truth: GUIDING OUR MOUTHS - Psalm 141:2 The Above scripture says and I quote “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth and keep the door of my lips”. We must all, like David, pray that a watch be set before our mouth and the door of our lips be kept. The emphasis of this prayer is that as believers or Christians we must be alert, cautious and sensitive about the use of our mouths regarding the things we speak or say especially about people or others. It is important to realize that guiding or learning to guide our mouths is an outstanding mark of Christian maturity. Many of us have failed and continue to fail in this important area of Christian living. Some lack self-control, restraint, discipline or carefulness in this crucial matter. Our mouths must not be used as instruments of slander, back-biting, gossip, talkativeness, spreading rumours, tale bearing, busybodies, evil speaking, criticizing, condemning, ridicule, and other form of malicious acts. Such behaviours are tools in the hand of Satan and to engender strife, schism, and hindrance to the work and move of God. Some of us have made it a constant habit of engaging in this great evil of speaking evilly about others. Yet we disguise ourselves in sheep’s clothing posing as friends or brothers but beneath we are double-tongued and pretenders. May we pray always that a watch be set before our mouths and the door of our lips be kept from evil speaking. Instead, let’s use our mouth to bless, encourage, counsel, prophesy, rebuke, correct, edify and pray for each other. This will bring glory to God our Father. We must endeavour to master the handling of information, conversation, and confidentiality, etc.
