Devotional for 8-22 God wants to do great things through you! You are meant to be a river of blessings, not a puddle drying in the sun. "For we are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 There’s a poem by American writer Carl Sandburg. Although I never cared much for his politics, he had a way of writing that always moved me. Fifty-Fifty What is there for us two to split fifty-fifty, to go halvers on? A Bible, a deck of cards? a farm, a frying pan? a porch, front steps to sit on? How can we be pals when you speak English and I speak English and you never understand me and I never understand you? Too often in life we give up on ourselves. When we’re young we want to be doctors and lawyers and presidents. When we get older our dreams fizzle away and our lives revolve around the time clock and we wonder what could have been. God didn’t make you to be a “what could have been.” No matter your station in life. No matter what broken dreams lie behind you. God has plans for you. They may not be the dreams of glory you expected, but nevertheless they will bring glory. If we could just learn to go “halvers” on our life with God. Listen to where God is pulling us and pray for the right direction then maybe people could look at our lives and say, “One day I want to be just like you.” Let us pray. O God, who gave manna in the wilderness long ago, who still provides for those who hunger and thirst today, we have come to you this day with longing. May the things we and say, as well as the things we think and feel, be acceptable and pleasing unto you. Forgive us when what we say is not what we think, and when our actions do not live up to our words of faith. Help us to hear what you want for our lives and give us the strength to be the person you want us to be. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
