Diabetes galloping away Around 20 per cent of the Lankan urban population and 15 per cent of rural population were detected to be suffering from diabetes. Although all government hospitals had been equipped with required care, the measures taken for the prevention of the disease were inadequate, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Diabetic Conference held at Hotel Galadari on Thursday (3). Minister Sirisena said that diabetes had posed a major threat not only to Sri Lanka but also to the entire world, because of its spread in almost all countries rapidly. Even small children in Sri Lanka and some of the neighbouring countries had become victims of the disease due to unhealthy eating habits and genetic factors. He pointed out that due to diabetes many other disease could be contracted by a person. For instance various heart diseases, kidney diseases and inability to cure injuries and wounds would be the result of uncontrolled diabetes. The Health Ministry had provided both physical and human resources to treat diabetic cases, but the preventive medicine was rather insufficient. Due to indifference of people and ignoring health warnings had increased the spread of the disease. It was extremely important to practice healthy lifestyles to lead prevent the onslaught of the disease, the Minister said. island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=89507
