Diabetic retinopathy causes more blindness, visual impairment worldwide Worldwide cases of blindness and visual impairment associated with diabetic retinopathy grew 27% and 64%, respectively, between 1990 and 2010, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 and a literature search. Researchers also found the eye disorder spurred 2.6% of all blindness and 1.9% of all moderate and severe vision impairment globally.
