Diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs Disease in 2012, Derek Hogg — a 31-year-old father of two — is less than two months from being a former Kankakee firefighter and six months shy of qualifying for a 50 percent disability payment that would transfer to his wife, Holly, if he dies. At Mondays Kankakee City Council meeting Hogg proposed a plan to extend his full-time employment to get him to the seven-year mark that would trigger the pension benefit. But Kankakee Mayor Nina Epstein said allowing that to happen would be breaking the law.
