Diann Day 5: GREAT NEWS! This afternoon she was downgraded from ICU to a regular room. The PT people put her in a wheelchair and she rolled herself halfway down the hall using her own legs! And now she qualifies for the hospital-based therapy (depending also on what the insurance company says)! When I visited her tonight, her friend Maria was already there and she and Diann were having a lively visit. She was energetic, participatory; we were laughing and mugging and having a good time. She kept trying to sit up, so I helped support her weak side; we dropped the bedrail and, carefully, helped her sit on the side of the bed. Then stand! She sat and stood 4 or 5 times! She wanted to walk, but she was attached to too many lines and hoses to go anywhere. She still cant talk or swallow, BUT her attempts sounded significantly more like speech now. I dont ordinarily put much stock in signs or odd coincidences or whatever, but ... the room they moved her to is 414 -- which is her birthday.
