Did Hazrat Ameer Muaawiyyyah ever curse or order the cursing of Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anhuma Shias like to think that Hazrat Ameer Muaawiyyyah radhi Allaho anho started the despicable innovation of himself cursing and ordering the cursing of Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anho ----Naoozubillah. There is absolutely no authentic proof whatsoever from sunni sources to support this idea. This is a purely shia accusation against a noble companion of Rasoolullah sallallaho alaihe wasallam and a scribe of revelation, the uncle of believers, Ameer Muaawiyyyah radhi Allaho anho. The ONLY saheeh naration in sunni literature is that by Saad bin Abi Waqas radhi Allaho anho, one of the Ashrah Mubassharah, as reported in Saheeh Muslim. Shias often misquote this hadeeth to prove their point. The actual hadeeth is, عن عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: أَمَرَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ سَعْدًا فَقَالَ: مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسُبَّ أَبَا التُّرَابِ؟ فَقَالَ: أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتُ ثَلَاثًا قَالَهُنَّ لَهُ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَنْ أَسُبَّهُ، لَأَنْ تَكُونَ لِي وَاحِدَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ حُمْرِ النَّعَمِ،..... الى اخره رواه مسلم. Saad bin Abi Waqas radhi Allaho anho said, Muaawiyyah bin Abi Sufiyyaan said (to him) , What prevents you from making subb (blaming ) Abaa Turaab (Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anho).? So He (Saad) said, Because I remember three things Rasoolullah said about him. So I will never make Subb (blame) of him. Even one of those things would have been more dear to me than red camels....... to the end. (Muslim ) The above narration is about a meeting between Hazrat Ameer Muaawiyyyah and Saad bin Abi Waqas radhi Allaho anho, which occured at Hajj after Hazrat Usmaan radhi Allaho anho had been martyred and Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anho had been appointed Khalifah. Hazrat Usmaan radhi Allaho anhos killers were amongst the supporters of Hazrat Ali. Muhammad bin Abi Bakr had come with them and brought them to assassinate Hazrat Usmaan. This was due to a grudge he had with Hazrat Usmaan. When Muhammad bin Abi Bakr grabbed Hazrat Usmaans beard to push and throw him down, Hazrat Usmaan said to him, If your father saw this , he would not have been happy. These words of Hazrat Usmaan shook Muhammad bin Abi and he left Hazrat Usmaan and stepped back. The others who had come with him jumped on Hazrat Usmaan and martyred him. Hazrat Usmaans wife tried to intervene and was also hurt in this struggle. She later testified to the whole event and the role of Muhammad bin Abi Bakr that he brought the killers with him but then did not take part in the eventual killing. Muhammad bin Abi Bakrs mother Asmaa bint Umais, after the death of Hazrat Abu Bakr , married Hazrat Ali. So Muhammad bin Abi Bakr was his step son. When Hazrat Usmaans wife identified Muhammad bin Abi Bakr as a culprit and the killers were known to him as he came with them, so when Ameer Muaawiyyyah and the other sahaabah demanded prompt justice for the killing of Hazrat Usmaan and Hazrat Ali felt unable to deliver that justice promptly, Ameer Muaawiyyyah blamed Hazrat Ali for this apparent inability to deliver justice for Ameerul-Momineen. Especially as well because the killers were among the supporters of Hazrat Ali and known to his step son Muhammad bin Abi Bakr. Ameer Muaawiyyyah then lobbied some of the senior Sahaabah for this. Saad bin Abi Waqas radhi Allaho anho was amongst the few most senior Sahaabah alive as he was from amongst the Ashrah Mubassharah and one of the six members of the committee appointed by Hazrat Umar to choose khalifah after him and he was also amongst those who had initially apointed Hazrat Usmaan and then Hazrat Ali to Khilaafat as well. So saad bin Abi Waqas was a powerful figure and a very senior sahaaabi. So when Ameer Muaawiyyyah met him at Hajj , he questioned him, مامنعك ان تسب ابا تراب What prevents you from making SUBB of Abaa Turaab.? Subb in Arabic does not mean CURSE. Although it generally means to swear but it also means to BLAME someone. If Ameer Muaawiyyyah had wanted Saad to curse Hazrat Ali then he would have said, ما منعك ان تلعن ابا تراب What prevents you from cursing Abaa Turaab. But he doesn In any case , Ameer Muaawiyyyah only questioned Hazrat Saad , that, What prevents you from making Subb of Abaa Turaab.? He did not force him to do so. When Hazrat Saad replied that he cant and wont , and gave his reasons, Hazrat Ameer Muaawiyyyah stopped , did not pressure him and left him. There is no compulsion of cursing Hazrat Ali from Ameer Muaawiyyyah. The whole issue is exaggerated and misunderstood. The reality is as explained above. Ameer Muaawiyyyah only wanted Hazrat Saad to blame Hazrat Ali for not being able to deliver justice for Hazrat Usmaan. In any case , if Hazrat Ali was ever cursed by Ameer Muaawiyyyah, then why did Hazrat Hasan and Husain radhi Allaho anhuma -give him allegiance , -used to visit and stay with him -accept his gifts. Would anybody behave that way towards some one who cursed their father and especially if that father was Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anho and the children were the likes of Hazrat Hasan and Husain radhi Allaho anhuma. Secondly, from the so many sons and grandsons of Hazrat Ali , did No one have the courage and respect to stand up in honour of their father and grandfather , if and when Hazrat Ali was being cursed. If the shia version of Hazrat Ali being cursed had any truth , then it leaves the entire Ahle-bait and descendents of Hazrat Ali in a very shady state of character- being unable and unwilling to stand up in defence of the honour of their noble father and grandfather. If Ameer Muaawiyyyah radhi Allaho anho used to curse and ordered the cursing of Hazrat Ali radhi Allaho anho and this evil practice supposedly continued for many years, then, -Where were the shias of Hazrat Ali during all this period ? Or -Did they simply not exist ? Or -Were they not faithful and loyal to Hazrat Ali at all.?
