BOOTNECK’S It is the same as The British “Bootneck,” are so called because the Marines uniform was held together at the throat by a hook and eye fastening which cut into the wearer’s throat. To stop this happening, ‘bootnecks’ used to cut the tongue out of their boots & sew it between the fastening & their throats, easing the discomfort. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- BOOTS Boots were first worn in cold, mountainous regions & hot, sandy deserts where horse-riding communities lived. Heels on boots kept feet secure in the stirrups. The first lady’s boot was designed for Queen Victoria in 1840.
