Did a workshop a while back; a few hundred people of mixed genders, backgrounds, ages and education levels, tending towards more educated and affluent. They asked us to raise our hands if we have ever feared for our physical safety. Nearly every hand goes up. Then they started decreasing the time interval. Have we feared for our physical safety in the past 20 years? My hand goes down and many others. 10 years? 5 years? 1 year? By the time they reached 6 months no man still had his hand raised. Two thirds of women still did. At 1 month nearly half the women still had hands up. At one week they asked us to look around. One third of the women present had feared for their physical safety in the past week. I remember that moment of shock every time I catch myself thinking I know what its like to be a woman living in our society.
