Did anyone happen to watch Charlie Rose last evening? His first guest was Dr Kissinger and their conversation centered around the Ukraine/ Crimea crisis. His second guest was the author, James Patterson. Patterson has apparently written seven new novels in the past six months but was noticeably uncomfortable seeing them on Charlies desk and even more so discussing them. Hes sold 275 million copies so hes commercially tremendously successful as an author but I really dont appreciate the mass-production corporate book manufacturer approach he and his publisher have taken to maximize shareholder return. I guess Im old fashioned in that I have great value and appreciation for the toil a real author goes through researching, imagining, writing and fact-checking his or her work in service of his reader. An atelier approach rather than a literature factory approach. I feel the soul of the book is lost and the relationship between author and reader just isnt possible like this.
