Did it ever happen before that father and son clashed in the final - TopicsExpress

Did it ever happen before that father and son clashed in the final of a major event. That was the intriguing scenario set up by Tyrur Sugar Ray and his son Tyrur Nathan as they both qualified for next week’s final of the Hamilton Architects Champion Stakes at Shelbourne Park. Vimmerby and Deanridge Pennys were the other heat winners apart from Sugar Ray while the favourite Greenwell Hulk made his exit. SUGAR DEFIES THE YEARS There’s an old saying that you can’t keep a good one down and it was certainly true in the first semi-final of the Hamilton Architects Champion Stakes at Tyrur Sugar Ray (Top Honcho/ Maireads Fantasy) showed that age is no barrier to performance as he won in 29.83. He broke fast from his favourite inside box but the early pace of Indigojack carried him a few lengths ahead to the bend from Sugar Ray and with Greenwell Hulk and Vanrooney disputing the third spot. Indigojack had a three length advantage over Tyrur Sugar Ray down the far side with Greenwell Hulk in third just ahead of Vanrooney. But it all suddenly changed off the last bend as PJ Fahy’s Tyrur Sugar Ray came up the inside rail and got on terms with Indigojack before snatching the verdict by a head in 29.83. It was then just half a length to Greenwell Hulk with Vanrooney another three parts of a length back in third. VIMMERBY EDGES IT We faced the intriguing scenario of father and son taking each other on in the final as Sugar Ray’s son Tyrur Supermac was wearing the red jacket in the second semi and he certainly gave it a real go before eventually finishing third. It was another veteran performer Ballymac Vic that got away smartly and led up from Vimmerby and Blenhiem Cracker. Into the back and Ballymac Vic had a few lengths in hand of Vimmerby but now Tyrur Supermac was in third. Vimmerby, trained by Johnny Kavanagh for John Somers, challenged into the third bend but was cut off. Undaunted, Vimmerby (Winetavern Oscar/ Wee Rose Garden) challenged on the outside turning for home and in a thrilling finale he edged it by a head from Ballymac Vic in 29.76 with Tyrur Supermac some two and a half lengths third. PENNYS LEADS THE WAY The third semi-final was full of talking points and unfortunately the biggest was the fact that Glenanore Dancer sustained a nasty injury when a couple of lengths in front around the second bend and he pulled up. This incident left Rosemary Price’s Deanridge Pennys (Kinloch Brae/ Doodle Doo) in front and he went on to win in 29.90. The other big talking point was that Tyrur Nathan came through to finish a two length second and so he joins his dad Tyrur Sugar Ray in next Saturday’s final. Deanridge Pennys led into the back from Lughill Edward and Tyrur Nathan with the latter moving second on the third bend. He then ran wide turning for home and Deanridge Pennys, continuing his return to form, won by two lengths from Nathan with Barefoot Apollo a four length third. CHAMPION TRAP DRAW 1 VIMMERBY 2 TYRUR SUGAR RAY 3 INDIGOJACK 4 DEANRIDGE PENNYS 5 BALLYMAC VIC 6 TYRUR NATHAN (W) **************** PRINCE IN COMMAND Liam Dowling’s Green Prince (Droopys Scolari/ Polar Floss) proved to be a worthy winner of the first semi-final of the Hamilton Architects Champion Plate. It was very level to the bend here between Razldazl Al, Green Prince and Focus On Carlow but the Declan Thornton owned Green Prince asserted on the bend while Focus On Carlow was baulked. Down the back Green Prince was a few lengths to the good with Band Major showed decent pace to move second by the third bend and with Skywalker Star prominent on the outside. But as Green Prince went on to win by two and a half lengths from Band Major in 29.83, Razldazl Al rallied to take the third qualifying spot by a head from Skywalker Star. JIM’S BASKET IS STRONG The second semi-final was a very tight affair to the opening bends but thereafter it became something of a winning canter for Jim Brosnan’s Shopping Basket. This dog boasts a smashing strike rate and was winning the eighth race of his career from just 16 starts. It was Native Hut, General Wolf, Shopping Basket and Jacks Ace in a line racing up to the bend but General Wolf forged ahead into the bend with Shopping List riding a bump to be a close second into the back. At this stage Shopping Basket (Eden Brett/ Shopping List) took it up from General Wolf and he drew clear to win by three and a half lengths from General Wolf in 29.99 with Jacks Ace some two lengths back in third. PLATE TRAP DRAW 1 GENERAL WOLF 2 BAND MAJOR 3 GREEN PRINCE 4 RAZLDAZL AL 5 SHOPPING BASKET (M) 6 JACKS ACE (W) ************* EMERS A REAL SUPERSTAR Tom and PJ Quinn’s Emers Superstar (Hondo Black/ Dublinhill Pride) returned to his very best to run out a convincing winner of the fifth race in a blistering 28.25. The Gerry Holian trained March ’12 whelp hit the ground running from trap two and took over from fast starting Vito Wal on the first bend. Thereafter his only opposition was the clock and he duly posted an exceptional time as he came home with four and a half lengths in hand on Laughil Bolt and it was another two and a half lengths to Vito Wal in third. Paradise Maverick justified hot favouritism in comfortable fashion when making all over 575yds in the second race. Trained by Pat Buckley for Javier Jarne and Mike Davis, the son of Royal Impact and Paradise Alanna was never under any threat as he cruised home four lengths clear in a fast 31.42.. Longslip Benjy got up late to beat Pay The Lolly by a head for second spot.. Ibiza Rocks was one of the easiest winners of the night when making every inch in the fourth race. Anthony Hamilton’s son of Ace Hi Rumble and Moscow Minx shot from the inside trap to dictate throughout and he eventually came home two and a half lengths clear of Black Apache in 28.78 with He Got Lucky two lengths third. Graham Holland’s Runaway Rover is turning out to be a great moneyspinner for the Hovex Racing Syndicate and the son of Leeview Jet and Droopys Comfort chalked up a sixth victory from sixteen starts when winning the Dandelion Open 525. Here Dundrum King broke fast and cut inwards from trap five, causing some crowding in the process. Runaway Rover was second on the bend and he motored down the far side to lead at halfway en route to a three length victory over Dundrum King in 28.78. Ballymac Alamo was two lengths back in third. PEDRO SCORES AGAIN Peter Cronin and the LBDDD Syndicate can start planning a campaign for their promising youngster, El Pedro after he made it two from two in the sixth race. After an impressive 28.75 return in his debut, the son of Crash and Little Flutter was well fancied to double up and he didn’t disappoint despite failing to set the early tempo. Instead that task fell to Riverside Billy, who led El Pedro into the back straight. The latter had the superior back straight pace, however, and he took over at the third turn before seeing off the early pace-setter by two lengths in 28.87. Loughteen was another two lengths back in third. Rockburst Vienna, owned by Ian and Nicola McGinnis, was out with the washing for much of the journey in the opener over 750yds after a slow start, but she produced a big finish to come from a mile back to lead in the dying yards. Samar Rozy set the pace for much of the way, but ran out of steam in the latter stages. Instead the Graham Holland trained Rockburst Vienna (Westmead Hawk/ Little Flutter) led late to beat Alexs Ace by a short head in 42.60 with Samar Rozy a half length third. There was a dramatic finish to the third race with Painstiown Chief leading late as long time leader Clonkeen Skipper seemed to lose focus. Trained by Paul Hennessy for Paul Hynes, Painstown Chief took numerous small bumps around the opening two turns, but finally went second before halfway. Clonkeen Skipper remained clear, but the gap suddenly began to close as they approached the third turn. Clonkeen Skipper then dived inwards, towards his rival, and the pair clashed. Painstown Chief maintained his momentum, however, to take the verdict by three parts of a length in 29.10
