Did we win Iraq? Was there anything for us too win? As I get older - TopicsExpress

Did we win Iraq? Was there anything for us too win? As I get older I am looking back at the conflicts with a new eye. Instead of being just another set of boots on the ground immediately concerned with not findings IEDs with my feet, I am looking at the broader aspect of the wars. I served as an infantryman in both Iraq and Afghanistan at arguably the height of the fighting. At the time they both felt extremely different from each other. Now with the presence of hindsight and maturity I am starting to believe they were far more common than I previously believed. At least at the strategic level. I have pondered long into the night about this stuff. Even written down pages of my thoughts. And now just last night I came across a revelation I had subconsciously been trying to suppress for varying reasons. The question changed from did we win, to how COULD we have won? We set ourselves up for a long protracted war with no end except a meek withdrawal after an arbitrary amount of time has passed so we dont lose too much face as a nation. I know this subject has been hashed out many times before by analysts and politicians for years but it has interested me for some time now and I have developed my own thoughts of it. Especially after reading literature penned by the great leaders of old, that enlightened me to the workings of man at a grand strategic level.
