Did you catch Chris Barber Leader of the Band on BBC Radio 2 last week?? Chris Barber OBE celebrates his Diamond Jubilee as leader of his band - an icon of traditional jazz in Europe. Together with his big band he stands out as one of the finest, if not the finest, of his kind anywhere in the world. Chris Barber formed his first band in 1949 at the age of nineteen. Over the years, it evolved into the BIG Chris Barber Band, and despite being “on the slide” since 1949 they keep marching on to the 21st century. The BIG Chris Barber Band features everything from New Orleans to blues to late 20s Ellington, played with extraordinary panache and skill. In addition to his own very successful recording career, Chris was responsible for bringing blues greats like Muddy Waters & Sister Rosetta Tharpe to the UK for the first time; the impact of those performances went a long way to creating the British blues boom of the 1960s. His involvement in the fledgling Marquee Club in London gave the Rolling Stones a valuable early platform, & he was also one of the founding fathers of the Reading Festival The Big Chris Barber Band is at Middlesbrough Theatre on Friday 20th February at 7.30pm. Tickets £19.50 / Concessions £17.50 Box Office 01642 81 51 81 or 01642 729 729 bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010dj3h
