Did you ever do this back in the day......make a person to person phone call to let someone you made it home......without having to pay? Lets say you were traveling to be with relatives over the Christmas break, {or anytime of year} The trip was a long one...{meaning at least a couple of hour car ride.or perhaps a trip via plane} Point is you would want to communicate with your loved ones upon returning home. But was considered a toll call would be very expensive to make...even for a couple of minutes.... So, you would call person to person. This meant that you would have the operator assist you and you would only be charged if that person was there. So ahead of time you would all decide what name to use......lets say it was Stanley....someone who didnt even exist, perhaps. You got on the line, told the operator that you were trying to reach Stanley Jacobs...at such and such a number. The operator would call, she would explain that this was a person to person call, and ask for Stanley Jacobs? Oh sorry, he is not here now would come the reply. Your call was ended here, but rather than pay some very costly toll fee.....you communicated to each other {for free} that those who had departed had arrived home safe.
