Did you ever meet someone who seems totally ordinary in every way until you learn something about them that makes them EXTRAordinary? This weekend I started sitting with two little old ladies. I go there at night because the one broke her leg just over a month ago and needs help getting up during the night and to keep tabs on her bandages. On my second night there I started to learn a little bit more about them... They are sisters, aged 94 and 97. That fact alone is Amazing... then I listen to them talk and although they do show some signs of dementia, they are totally with it when it comes to their mental state. They know just about everything. Then I start to learn a little bit of their history. They have a picture from the early 1900s on the wall and when I ask about it, they tell me that it is a picture of their mother and father, right after they were married and immigrated to the US from Russia to escape persecution. They are Jews. They had three girls and when the youngest, now 94, was 6 weeks old their father died of Pneumonia. Their mother did not remarry until eight years later. Those times were hard, let alone being a mother of three babies! Then they tell me that in their early years they enlisted in the Army Corps as nurses, but made the Army promise that they would always stay together... they were volunteering to serve at the worst time for Jews... 1944-45 when Hitler had high reign. They were stationed in Normandy, France and were there during the Battle of the Bulge. Their mother died when she was over 100. Everything I learn about them simply amazes me and I cant wait to hear what else they have to say. This job is one of the reasons I love what I do. If YOU had this opportunity, what would YOU ask them?
