Did you ever wonder where the terms uppercase and lowercase came from? Well, back when things were printed using typesetting by hand, the different letters were kept in trays or cases, each letter had its own place in the case. There was one case, the Upper Case, for capital letters, and the bottom case, the Lower Case, for the normal letters. A worker in the newspaper print room would use a stick like the one at right, so set the type in. It would be transferred to the larger board and the newspaper would be laid out as such. Old time type setters were amazing, there hands literally flew back and forth grabbing type at a rate most of us could never achieve! Imagine, it was used once and then all taken apart for use the next day! So there you have it, uppercase and lowercase explained!!
