Did you grow up living near lions? Primary school headmaster Martin Muhindo did! In this 3-minute video, Headmaster Muhindo talks about how lions were viewed when he was a child and how they are viewed today as being important to Uganda’s economy due to tourism revenue. 20% of the fees that tourists pay to enter Uganda’s national parks go to the surrounding district governments to help build roads, clinics and other infrastructure. This money does not go to individuals, however, so there is still the challenge of how to offset the costs certain families face living near wildlife such as lions that can prey on livestock and elephants that can damage crops. Supporting rural communities in their tourist initiatives is one way to help.
