Did you hear Andrew MacDonald on ABC Southern Queensland this afternoon talking about the special wood screws he needs to complete the preservation of the Museum’s 1916 Australian Army General Service (GS) wagon? This is what they look like. Andrew says: “The screws we are looking for are the old type with countersunk heads and a slot, not a Phillip’s head. These are large screws, #22 gauge (approximately 23/64” diameter) and 2 ½ inches long, or 9mm by 63mm. “I have found a supplier in the US but they are only able to supply 17 screws and we need 70 of them! “We can get the items made from brass, but that is not in keeping with the original build; we have also looked into having the items CNC machined at an engineering works or reforging the hexagonal heads of coach screws, but both options are labour intensive and expensive.” If you have any of these very specific screws that you can donate to the project, please give us a call on 07 4659 4900 (during office hours) or email [email protected]
