Did you know - how tight your pets collar is may affect their safety? DOGS - dog collars should not be able to be taken off over their heads without being undone, this is very important! If too loose your dog may slip their collar during a walk, many dogs injured by cars are for this reason. 2 fingers under the collar is enough space without it being too tight and uncomfortable. CATS - cat collars are the opposite of dog collars and should be slightly loose, enough to be able to come off over the head in case they get looped over a tree branch or get their leg stuck through the collar. Even better is the use of safety collars, these have an elastic part or a breakaway clip which will come apart with enough pressure. Cat collars are a great way of identifying yourself as the cats owner with your telephone number, buy an engraved 20mm tag and it wont be too heavy or get in the way (micro-chipping is more effective as they cannot be removed but why not do both!) and a bell helps to warn off the birds! Please make sure kitten and puppy collars are regularly checked for tightness though, as they grow very quickly! We occasionally see injuries caused by embedded collars.
