Did you know Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. president to hold a patent? On May 22, 1849, Lincoln received Patent No. 6469 for a device that could refloat boats that had run aground. In 1848, Lincoln started working on his invention between his sessions in Congress. Walter Davis, a mechanic residing in Springfield, offered Lincoln the tools and advice necessary for him to create a scale model of his invention. Returning back to session, Lincoln took the finished scale model to Washington D.C. with him and hired attorney Z.C. Robbins to apply for the patent. The patent application was filed on March 10, 1849. Roughly two months later Lincoln received his patent for buoying vessels over shoals. While visiting Lincoln Home NHS, be sure to stop by the Dean House where you can see a reproduction model of the device.
