Did you know? Groves Veterinary Clinic has noticed a recent increase in the diagnosis of Giardia in our canine patients. We offer in house testing for Giardia as well as treatment. Giardiasis refers to an intestinal infection that is caused by the protozoan parasite giardia. Giardia cysts are shed in animal feces. A dog becomes infected with Giardia by eating or sniffing the cysts from contaminated ground, or by drinking contaminated water from ponds, puddles, etc... These microscopic parasites attach themselves to the intestinal wall and the damage causes an acute (sudden-onset) foul-smelling diarrhea. The stool may range from soft to watery, often has a greenish tinge to it, and occasionally contains blood. Infected dogs tend to have excess mucus in the feces. Vomiting may occur in some cases. The signs may persist for several weeks and gradual weight loss may become apparent. If you suspect your pet may have Giardia, call us today at 391-5251.
