Did you know? Hippotherapy is the use of horses and horseback riding in physical, occupational, speech and psychological therapy Hippophobia and equinophobia both refer to the fear of horses Hippocrates translates to ‘horse master’ The phrase coffin bone comes from being deeply seated in the horse’s hoof, like a coffin is set into the ground. Floating- is filing the sharp points off of a horse’s teeth, but the word comes from laying cement. When workers put in sidewalks, they smooth the concrete, which is called floating. Why do we mount from the left side? In medieval times, knights wore swords, mostly on the left since most people are right handed. This made mounting from the horse’s left side more natural. Following tradition, we mount and lead from the left side of a horse. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. This phrase can be traced back to St. Jerome, who referred to it as a common saying in his introductory remarks to the Ephesians in his translation of the New Testament. “Equi donate dentes non inspiciuntur”. The literal translation: ‘A given horse’s teeth are not inspected.” So when someone gives you something free, don’t be picky. Spavin: this term describes hock lameness, but is from the early Renaissance period in France. Horses affected by osteoarthritis of the hock, have a weird gait like the hopping of a sparrow (likened to a lump). The middle French word “esparvain”, is thought to have given the horses of English speakers a ‘spavin’. :) Fox Run Equine Center :)
