Did you know? It makes you proud to say youre a part of drum corps . . . The Chicago suburb of Calumet City held a drum corps contest back in 1957 that could have been the scene of a real American tragedy. Instead, it became a truly inspiring story that has been retold many times. The Giles Yellow Jackets were an all African-American corps from Chicago (they were the first all-black junior corps to ever win a national championship, that being the Sons of the American Legion title). Following the contest that night, the Yellow Jackets were headed to their bus when they were attacked by an all-white gang of armed young people. Immediately 260 members of the Madison Scouts, Cavaliers, Norwood Park Imperials, Chicago Cadets and Vaqueros (nearly all of those 260 being white) stepped in to protect the Yellow Jackets and drive off the gang of thugs. The police, who arrived moments later, credited the corps members with staving off a potential time bomb. (By Brian Tolzmann, DCW staff)
