Did you know...? Pope Francis Apostolic Visit is from January 15-19, 2015. This is time to learn more about the Philippines and the Filipino people... A brief overview and history of the Philippines: A population of about 100 million people, it is the 7th most populated country in Asia and the 12th most populated country in the world. Another 12 million Filipinos comprise one of the worlds largest dispersion of people from their country of origin. Multiple ethnicities and cultures are found throughout the islands. In prehistoric times, Negritos (people of dark complexion and short stature native to the Austronesian region) were the earliest inhabitants. Successive wave of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Islamic states occurred with various nations established under various rulers. Spanish colonization began after the coming of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos named the archipelago Las Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip II of Spain in 1543 and the first Spanish settlement in the islands was established in 1565 with the arrival of Miguel López de Legazpi from Mexico City. The Philippines became part of the Spanish Empire for more than 300 years, which resulted in Roman Catholicism becoming the predominant religion in the country. Manila became the western hub of the trans-Pacific Manila–Acapulco galleon trade connecting Asia with the Americas. The Philippine Revolution took place and independence from Spain was declared on June 12, 1898 with a short-lived First Philippine Republic established. This was followed by the Philippine–American War which resulted with the United States control in July 4, 1902. The Philippines was allowed self-government on March 24, 1934. Though there was a period of Japanese occupation, the United States retained sovereignty over the islands until 1945. After World War II, the Philippines was recognized as an independent nation from the United States on July 4, 1946. [Photos credit AFP & ctv news.ca]
