Did you know? That a combination of aerobic (cardio) training and anaerobic (weights, high intensity bursts) provides the best results for the heart in protecting against heart disease and strokes. Which are now the biggest killers on earth in both developed and developing countries. The heart adapts to these training stimuli by getting both larger and thicker, it becomes both stronger in each pump and capable of pumping more blood in one beat (far more efficient). Also of note is that only long term exercising and movement had the effect of keeping the heart healthy for longer (essentially keeping it younger or aging slower). There are peer reviewed scientific studies showing people that have regularly exercised up until the age of 60 years old having the heart health of a 30 year old. Exercise slows the rate of ageing but you have to get in and make a habit of it (at least 3 times a week) and do it over the long term. The awesome Podcast 9 by the Mind Muscle Project has a leading Australian cardiologist as their guest. Check it out if you would like to learn more about your body specifically the heart!
